Sirius rose in 1994 in Lisbon as one of the most visionary and ambitious symphonic black metal acts ever to emerge from Portugal, forging a sound rooted in astronomy, cosmic mysticism, and apocalyptic grandeur. Conceived initially as a solo project by Draconiis, the band quickly evolved into a full constellation of musicians whose backgrounds spanned black metal, industrial, and avant‑garde extremity. Their goal was clear from the beginning: to create a form of black metal that felt cosmic, futuristic, and violently transcendent, far removed from earthly concerns.
By 1997, Sirius had solidified into a powerful lineup with Vukodlack on drums and keyboards, Raven on bass, and later Gornoth on vocals. This formation recorded the demo Fiery Strife at the Cosmic Gates of Armageddon and the acclaimed …the Eclipse (The Summons of the Warriors of Armageddon)—a release that was hailed in the underground press as one of the strongest Portuguese black‑metal demos of its era. The band’s only live performance during this period drew more than 350 attendees, cementing their reputation as a rising force.
Their debut full‑length, Aeons of Magick (2000), released through Nocturnal Art Productions, remains a landmark of cosmic symphonic black metal. The album blends hyperspeed drumming, layered keyboards, and astral‑themed compositions such as Sidereal Mirror, The Collapsing Spheres of Time, and Travellers of the Stellar Ocean. Its atmosphere evokes collapsing stars, interdimensional gateways, and the cold vastness of space.
The follow‑up, Spectral Transition – Dimension Sirius (2001), pushed their cosmic vision even further, integrating industrial textures and more complex arrangements. This period saw the lineup stabilize around Konstrukt, Ca‑2, D‑Void, LRZ, and Draconiis, with each member contributing to the band’s increasingly futuristic and otherworldly identity.
Sirius disbanded in 2002, leaving behind a compact but monumental discography that continues to influence symphonic and avant‑garde black metal. Their fusion of cosmic themes, orchestral intensity, and industrial‑tinged extremity placed them alongside the most innovative acts of their era, and their albums remain cult classics for listeners drawn to black metal that reaches beyond the terrestrial into the vast, hostile beauty of the universe.
