Skogmark is an atmospheric black metal band from Saint Petersburg, formed in 2012 and rooted in the northern, nature‑driven tradition of the genre. Their music blends cold, melodic tremolo riffs with sweeping pagan atmospheres, drawing heavily on the imagery of forests, winter landscapes, and ancestral memory. From the beginning, Skogmark positioned itself within the lineage of Scandinavian‑influenced atmospheric black metal, but with a distinctly Russian sense of melancholy and vastness.
The debut EP Autumn‑Winter (2013) introduced the band’s core aesthetic: raw yet melodic black metal infused with seasonal ambience and a strong sense of place. This was followed by the full‑length Sworn to Paganism (2014), a defining early statement that combined harsh vocals, icy guitar lines, and pagan‑themed lyricism. The album gained attention in the underground for its sincerity and its ability to balance aggression with atmosphere, establishing Skogmark as a rising name in the Russian pagan/atmospheric scene.
After several years of relative quiet, Skogmark returned with Æra av ensomhet (2020), a more mature and expansive work. The album showcased a deeper emotional range, with longer compositions, richer melodic development, and a colder, more introspective tone. It marked a shift toward a more immersive, Scandinavian‑leaning sound while retaining the band’s characteristic rawness.
Their most recent full‑length, Roots (2023), further solidified Skogmark’s identity. The album explores themes of heritage, nature, and spiritual connection to the land, with a production that is both clearer and more atmospheric than earlier works. The band continued to release singles into 2024, including Where the Winter Rules and Icewind, each reinforcing their dedication to winter‑bound, nature‑focused black metal.
Despite lineup changes over the years, Skogmark has maintained a consistent artistic vision centered on pagan themes, northern mysticism, and the emotional resonance of the natural world. Their work stands as a strong example of modern Russian atmospheric black metal—melodic, cold, and deeply rooted in the cycles of nature.
