Starless is an atmospheric black metal project from Novosibirsk, founded in 2016 by the multi‑instrumentalist Nalar. The project stands out within the Siberian atmospheric scene for its unusual blend of melancholic black metal, nature‑driven ambience, and subtle Christian spiritual themes—an uncommon combination in the genre. Starless’ music is characterized by cold, melodic tremolo lines, introspective moods, and a sense of quiet reverence, often evoking vast winter landscapes and inner contemplation rather than aggression or despair.
The earliest material appeared in April 2016 as a streaming‑only demo containing early versions of “Той черной тени силуэт” and “От тьмы кромешной отличу,” later reworked for the debut album. These first recordings already displayed Nalar’s focus on emotional atmosphere, melodic clarity, and a reflective tone that set Starless apart from the harsher tendencies of the regional scene.
The self‑titled debut Starless (2017) established the project’s identity: raw yet melodic atmospheric black metal infused with sorrowful harmonies and a sense of spiritual searching. The album’s sound is cold and minimalistic, but its melodic phrasing and emotional openness earned it attention among underground listeners who appreciated its sincerity and distinctive mood.
In 2019, Starless released Молчание, a more mature and expansive work. The album deepened the project’s focus on melancholy and contemplation, with longer compositions, richer layering, and a more pronounced sense of solitude. While still rooted in atmospheric black metal, Молчание incorporates ambient textures and a more refined melodic sensibility, reflecting Nalar’s growth as a composer and producer.
Starless remains active and independent, releasing music at a deliberate pace while maintaining a consistent artistic vision. The project occupies a unique space in Russian atmospheric black metal—melancholic, nature‑bound, spiritually introspective, and unmistakably personal.
