Stone of Erech was a short‑lived but memorable Spanish folk/black metal project rooted deeply in Tolkien lore and early pagan black‑metal aesthetics. The band originally began in 1998 under the name Morgoth, recording an unreleased demo before dissolving. A decade later, the project was resurrected in 2008 under the new name Stone of Erech, referencing the legendary black monolith from The Lord of the Rings—a symbol of ancient oaths, curses, and forgotten battles. This shift marked a clearer artistic direction: raw black metal infused with epic, fantasy‑driven atmospheres.
Their only official release, the self‑titled EP Stone of Erech (2008), showcased a minimalist but evocative approach: cold riffs, programmed drums, and harsh vocals layered with a sense of mythic grandeur. The music leaned toward the rawer side of folk/black metal, avoiding polished production in favor of a lo‑fi, atmospheric sound that fit the Tolkien‑inspired themes.
Despite the promise shown in the EP, the project remained underground and eventually faded, leaving behind a single release that has since become a small cult artifact among collectors of Iberian Tolkien‑metal.
