Summoned Hell formed in 2004 in Ponta Delgada, SĂŁo Miguel, as one of the Azores’ earliest melodic black metal bands before gradually shifting toward a heavier melodic death metal sound. The group began as a seven‑member ensemble and quickly became known across the island for their intense live presence, though early reception was mixed due to the strong influence of their inspirations. Over time, lineup changes refined their identity, and by 2008 the band had settled into its most stable formation: Hugo Almeida on guitars and later vocals, Ruben Ferreira on guitars, Paulo Arruda on bass, David Melo on drums, and Stephan Kobiákin on keyboards.
Their sole full‑length, Prison of Madness (2011), captures the band’s mature phase, fully embracing melodic death metal while retaining traces of their earlier black‑metal atmosphere. The album features tracks such as Heart of Madness, Sick Minds, In Sorrow, and Storms of Insanity, combining aggressive riffing with melodic leads and keyboard textures. It was released independently in Portugal and marked the culmination of nearly a decade of evolution, live performances, and stylistic refinement. The band also issued a video for the track Heart of Dust around the time of the album’s release, further promoting their final creative chapter.
Summoned Hell disbanded in 2013, leaving behind a single album and a legacy tied closely to the Azorean underground scene. Their trajectory—from melodic black metal origins to a more forceful melodic death metal expression—reflects the broader development of extreme metal in the islands during the 2000s.
