Svadilfare began in Bergen in 2005 as an atmospheric black metal project rooted in Norse mythology, antiāChristian themes, and a deep connection to nature. From the outset the band shaped a sound built on cold, flowing melodies and a raw yet reflective atmosphere, drawing on the mythic resonance of its nameāSvaưilfari, the stallion who fathered Sleipnir in the Eddic tradition. This mythological grounding informed both the project’s identity and its lyrical direction, merging pagan narratives with a stark, windswept musical aesthetic.
The debut Den som herjer (2012) introduced Svadilfare’s blend of atmospheric black metal and pagan intensity, marked by long, immersive compositions and a strong melodic undercurrent. Makt til uskyld (2013) expanded this foundation with a harsher, more defiant tone, while Krig i kunst (2015) pushed further into themes of conflict, identity, and artistic struggle. Fortapte rĆøtter (2019) brought a more mature and introspective expression, weaving natureābound melancholy with the project’s characteristic melodic edge.
Active under Naturmacht Productions, Svadilfare remains a solitary and uncompromising voice within Norwegian atmospheric black metal, defined by its mythological focus, its rejection of Christian influence, and its commitment to a sound shaped by solitude, landscape, and ancestral memory.
In the Poetic and Prose Edda,Ā SvaưilfariĀ (Old Icelandic for "The one who makes an unlucky journey") is the male horse that fathersĀ Ćưinn's horse,Ā Sleipnir. In the Prose Edda, it is said that itĀ Sleipnir's mother is no one else buĀ Loki/i in the form of a mare.
