The Heretic was one of the most distinctive melodic black‑metal bands to emerge from Spain in the late 1990s, active from 1996 until their dissolution in 2010 following the death of drummer Chrisphoval. Their sound fused melodic black metal, occult mysticism, and atmospheric keyboards, creating a style that was both aggressive and introspective. They became a cult name within the Spanish underground thanks to their emotional intensity, technical musicianship, and philosophical lyricism.

Their debut EP The Book of Fate (1997) and the split video 1st Repulsive Festival (1998) introduced their early rawness. With the full‑length Fallen from Heaven (The Apocriphal Scripts) (1999), The Heretic began shaping their signature sound: melodic tremolo lines, ritualistic atmospheres, and a strong sense of narrative. The EP Karmic (2000) continued this evolution.

Their breakthrough came with Chemistry for the Soul (2002), a critically praised album (89%) that blended melody, mysticism, and emotional depth. Gospel Songs in E minor (2005) pushed their style even further, earning a perfect 100% review and solidifying their reputation as one of Spain’s most expressive black‑metal acts. Their final release, Memorandum (1997–2007) (2010), served as a retrospective of their career.

The Heretic’s legacy remains tied to their ability to merge melodic black metal with philosophical and spiritual themes, and to the tragic loss of Chrisphoval, which ultimately ended the band’s journey.
