Theoroth was a short‑lived but remarkably prolific atmospheric black metal project from Mikhaylovsk, active only for a brief period yet leaving behind an extensive body of work. Founded by the multi‑instrumentalist WV—an extremely active figure in the Russian underground—the project evolved out of his earlier entity Зимний Дракон, shifting from winter‑themed raw black metal toward a more fantastical, narrative‑driven form of atmospheric black metal.
Theoroth’s music is steeped in dark fantasy: ancient kingdoms, cursed lands, horned kings, monumental ruins, and mythic battles. WV crafted these worlds through cold tremolo riffs, sweeping ambient layers, and lo‑fi production that emphasized mood over clarity. His approach was deeply rooted in the Russian tradition of solitary, high‑output black metal projects—raw, emotional, and driven by imagination rather than polish.
The project’s entire discography appeared in 2016, an astonishing burst of creativity that produced multiple full‑length albums and a split. The debut Nights Shine in the Five Towers introduced Theoroth’s signature sound: melancholic, medieval‑tinged melodies wrapped in foggy ambience, evoking forgotten citadels and moonlit battlements. The split A Hymn for Horned King / Cursed by Bonethrone expanded this mythic world, presenting material that felt like fragments of an ancient saga.
WV continued this momentum with Darkness Never Fades, Wounds of the Monumental Majesty, and Into Tyurendor, each album exploring different facets of his fantasy universe. These works are characterized by hypnotic repetition, mournful atmospheres, and a sense of wandering through vast, ruined landscapes. Though raw in execution, the music carries a strong narrative spirit, making Theoroth stand out among the many one‑man atmospheric projects of the era.
The project ended abruptly in 2016 as WV moved on to other endeavors. Over his lifetime, he was involved in dozens of underground bands—ranging from raw black metal to ambient, dungeon synth, and depressive black metal—leaving behind a sprawling legacy across the Russian scene. WV passed away in 2023, and Theoroth remains one of the most distinctive expressions of his imagination: a brief but vivid descent into a world of shadowed towers, cursed kings, and eternal night.
