Thy Great Empire is a German black/pagan metal band founded in 2011 in Dinslaken, North Rhine‑Westphalia. Emerging from the local underground with a blend of melodic death metal influences and atmospheric black metal elements, the band’s sound is defined by emotional intensity, melodic riffing, and lyrical themes centered on fear, inner struggles, and personal turmoil. Their music often balances aggression with introspective moods, placing them within the melodic and pagan‑tinged branch of German black metal.
The band’s earliest phase featured a rotating lineup of vocalists and musicians, culminating in the release of the Slender Man demo in 2012. This first recording introduced their raw yet melodic approach, combining tremolo‑driven black metal with death‑metal‑leaning structures and a dark narrative atmosphere. The demo circulated within the underground and helped establish the band’s identity during their formative years.
After several lineup changes—particularly in the vocal and drum positions—Thy Great Empire continued refining their sound, eventually stabilizing around founding guitarists Christopher Gassmann and Dominic Holzeisen. The addition of new members in 2020 marked a turning point, bringing renewed energy and a more cohesive musical direction. That same year, the band released the single City of the Damned, showcasing a more polished production and a stronger melodic sensibility while retaining the emotional weight and darkness characteristic of their earlier work.
With the arrival of vocalist Stefan Wieker in 2025, the band entered a new era, expanding their expressive range and preparing for further development. Though still unsigned, Thy Great Empire has maintained a steady presence in the German underground through live performances, independent releases, and a commitment to evolving their sound while staying rooted in the emotional and atmospheric foundations of black and melodic death metal.
