Tivaz is an atmospheric black metal project founded in Moscow in 2009, known for its fusion of cold, melodic black metal with themes drawn from nature, war, and classical poetry. The project’s ideological framing places it within the nationalist wing of the Russian underground, though musically it leans heavily toward atmospheric melancholy, sweeping tremolo lines, and a sense of epic, windswept grandeur. Tivaz’s sound is rooted in the earlyā2010s wave of Russian atmospheric black metalāraw, melodic, and emotionally charged, with a strong emphasis on solitary, natureābound imagery.
The debut fullālength Krieg (2010) established the project’s core identity: harsh vocals layered over icy riffs, martial undertones, and a sense of vast, wintry landscapes. The followāup demo Eternal Mist of Dreams (2011) and the EP Dreams of Autumn (2012) expanded this aesthetic, introducing more introspective melodies and a stronger focus on seasonal atmosphere. These early works positioned Tivaz as a project balancing aggression with a poetic, almost nostalgic sensibility.
Between 2013 and 2014, Tivaz released a series of singles and EPs that refined its sound. The Day Shall Never Come (2013) and Mystery of Black Sun (2014) showcased a more polished approach, while the compilation Frozen Heart of Forest (2014) gathered material that emphasized the project’s devotion to nature and cold, forestābound imagery. The single The Tyger (2014), inspired by William Blake’s poem, highlighted Tivaz’s engagement with classical literatureāan unusual but defining element of the project’s thematic palette.
The fullālength Under Nordic Stars (2014) marked a creative peak, blending atmospheric black metal with folkātinged melodies and a sense of mythic northern romanticism. This was followed by My Last Will (EP, 2014), a more introspective release that leaned into sorrowful harmonies and reflective lyricism. The 2015 album Behind a Veil of Dreams further developed Tivaz’s melodic and atmospheric tendencies, offering longer compositions and a more immersive emotional landscape.
Tivaz also contributed the track “ŠŃŃŃ Šŗ ŃŠ¾Š»Š½ŃŃ” to the compilation ŠŃŠ¾ŃŠøŠ²Š¾ŃŃŠ¾ŃŠ½ŠøŠµ (A Tribute to Holdaar), aligning the project with other nationalistāleaning acts in the Russian scene.
Despite its ideological framing, Tivaz’s musical identity is defined primarily by its atmospheric depth, poetic influences, and dedication to natureādriven black metal. The project remains active, continuing to operate independently while maintaining a cult following within the Russian underground.
