Vardøger formed in Trondheim in 1995 after an earlier, little‑documented phase under the name Hidden Paradise, beginning as a melodic black metal band with explicitly Christian themes before gradually evolving toward a more progressive and melodic death metal sound. Their early years were marked by long periods of inactivity and shifting lineups, which contributed to the project’s sporadic output but also to its distinctive hybrid identity. The Whitefrozen EP (2003) introduced their blend of cold, melodic black metal and spiritual lyricism, followed the same year by the split Come Armageddon, which further showcased their atmospheric and melodic approach.
After disbanding in 2006, Vardøger resurfaced in 2010 with renewed ambition. Despite announcing a potential name change due to extensive lineup shifts, the band ultimately chose to continue under the original moniker. This second era culminated in the full‑length Ghost Notes (2015), a significant stylistic leap into progressive and melodic death metal, marked by intricate arrangements, clean and harsh vocal interplay, and a more expansive emotional palette. The album reflected a matured vision that balanced heaviness with introspection while maintaining the band’s thematic focus on Christianity.
In Jan 2012, the band made the announcement that they would continue on making music, but because of the drastic lineup changes over the years, the band would be continuing on under a different name. The name change never happened however and on March 20, 2013 they announced they are continuing under the current name.
Vardøger dissolved again in 2018, leaving behind a compact but unusual legacy defined by long silences, stylistic transformation, and a rare intersection between Norwegian melodic black metal roots and progressive, spiritually driven metal.
