Vreid rose from the ashes of the band Windir after the death of frontman Valfar. Vreid was formed by three former Windir members and a new guitarist, Ese, who was replaced by former Windir guitarist Strom in 2010, making the connection with Windir even stronger than before.
Vreid is Norwegian for "Wrath
Vreid formed in Sogndal in 2004 directly out of the dissolution of Windir, carrying forward the creative core of that band while forging a new identity rooted in melodic black metal, war‑scarred narratives, and a colder, more martial aesthetic. Three former Windir members founded the project after Valfar’s death, joined initially by guitarist Ese; when he departed in 2010, former Windir guitarist Strom stepped in, completing the circle and strengthening the lineage that defines Vreid’s sound and spirit. Their name—Vreid, meaning Wrath—captures the emotional force that drives their music: disciplined aggression, somber reflection, and a deep engagement with Norwegian history.
Vreid’s early albums, beginning with Kraft (2004) and Pitch Black Brigade (2006), established a style that fused black‑metal harshness with melodic clarity and a strong sense of forward momentum. With I krig (2007) and Milorg (2009), the band turned decisively toward historical themes, especially World War II‑era Norway, blending narrative detail with cold, triumphant riffing. Later works such as V (2011), Welcome Farewell (2013), and SĂłlverv (2015) expanded their palette with more atmospheric and folk‑tinged elements while retaining the sharpness and discipline of their core sound.
Lifehunger (2018) and Wild North West (2021) showed Vreid at their most ambitious, integrating cinematic structures, narrative arcs, and a broader emotional range without abandoning the melodic black‑metal foundation. Their ongoing series of singles—Flammen (2023), From These Woods (2025), Kraken (2026), Loving the Dead (2026)—leads toward the announced full‑length The Skies Turn Black (2026), suggesting a continuation of their expansive, narrative‑driven approach.
Active under Indie Recordings, Vreid remain one of the most enduring and distinctive heirs to the Windir legacy, defined by their fusion of melody and cold aggression, their historical focus, and their commitment to carrying forward a lineage rooted in both personal loss and creative resilience.
