Wardra is a modern atmospheric black metal band from Moscow, active since 2016 and known for its cold, cosmicāleaning sound and a steadily evolving approach to atmosphere and melody. While rooted in the traditional Russian school of atmospheric black metalāicy tremolo riffs, distant vocals, and a sense of vast, indifferent spaceāWardra also incorporates elements of cosmic ambience, melodic layering, and a subtle postāblack sensibility. Their music often feels like a journey through desolate astral landscapes or abandoned mythic realms, carried by a blend of rawness and grandeur.
The band’s debut fullālength ŠŠµŠ±Š¾ Š¼ŠµŠ“Š½Š¾Š³Š¾ ŃŠ²ŠµŃŠ° (2017) introduced their core aesthetic: melancholic yet forceful, with a strong emphasis on mood and texture. The album’s titleā“Sky of Copper Color”ācaptures its tone: bleak, metallic, and atmospheric. In 2018, the EP Ancestor of the New World expanded their thematic scope, leaning into more mythic and cosmic imagery while refining their melodic sensibilities.
Wardra continued to develop their sound through the 2020 split Aberration of the Abyss, which showcased a darker, more aggressive edge without abandoning their atmospheric foundation. This release marked a transitional moment, hinting at the more expansive direction the band would take in the future.
In 2024, Wardra released Warden of the Stellar Crypts, their most ambitious and fully realized work to date. The album blends cosmic black metal aesthetics with their established atmospheric style, creating a vast, starāhaunted soundscape. It stands as the band’s defining statementāgrand, immersive, and thematically aligned with the cold infinity of space.
Wardra’s lineup has shifted over time, but the project remains anchored by guitarist W, whose vision shapes the band’s evolving identity. Their connection to projects like Majestat and Aethyr situates them within a broader network of Russian atmospheric and occultāleaning black metal.
