Windir formed in Sogndal in 1994 as a singular fusion of melodic black metal, folk, and Viking metal, built around Valfar’s vision of transforming local history, Norse mythology, and the Sognamål dialect into a musical language of its own. From the earliest demos Sogneriket (1994) and Det gamle riket (1995), the project carried a strong regional identity—melodic, triumphant, and deeply rooted in the culture and landscape of Sogn. This foundation crystallized on the debut Sóknardalr (1997), where folk‑influenced melodies, black‑metal intensity, and Valfar’s storytelling merged into a sound that was both epic and intimate.

With Arntor (1999), Windir reached a defining moment: sweeping compositions, rich keyboard layers, and a narrative focus on local legends and ancestral memory. 1184 (2001) expanded the band’s scope with more complex arrangements and a sharper melodic edge, while Likferd (2003) delivered their darkest and most mature work, balancing aggression with a deep sense of mourning and historical weight. Throughout these releases, Windir’s use of Sognamål and their commitment to regional history set them apart within the Norwegian scene, creating a legacy tied as much to place as to sound.

The band’s story ended abruptly in 2004 when Valfar died of hypothermia after being caught in a blizzard on his way to his family’s cabin. Windir disbanded shortly afterward, honoring his memory with a final concert in Oslo on September 3rd, 2004, supported by Enslaved, Finntroll, and Mindgrinder. The compilation Valfar, ein Windir (2004) and the Sognametal video (2005) preserved the band’s legacy, while the surviving members carried the creative lineage forward through Vreid and Cor Scorpii.

Windir remains one of Norway’s most influential melodic black metal acts—defined by regional pride, mythic storytelling, and a sound that bridged black metal ferocity with folk‑driven grandeur.

Windir is an ancient Norse word, translatable as "warrior". Most of the band's early albums featured lyrics written in the Sognamål dialect, a Western Norwegian dialect that is spoken in the area of Sogn.

Windir broke up in March 2004 after Valfar died of hypothermia after becoming caught in a blizzard on his way to his family's cabin.

The band performed their last concert in Oslo on September 3rd, 2004 in honor of Valfar. Enslaved, Finntroll, and Mindgrinder were the opening bands.

The remaining members formed Vreid and Cor Scorpii.

Compilation appearances:
- "Morkets Fyste .. The Sovereign Of Darkness" on Legions of Iron & Steel (CD 1996, Angel Dust Records)
- "Kampen" on Into The Void-Chapter One (Void Magazine, 1999)
- "Likferd" on Black Metal (year unknown)
