Wistful is a post‑black metal/shoegaze project from Porto shaped entirely by A. ClĂ©ment, who composes, performs, and records every instrument. The project began in 2007 under the name Arges, before transforming into Wistful in 2010 and adopting a more atmospheric, melancholic, and introspective identity. All lyrics are written in Portuguese, reinforcing the project’s emotional intimacy and regional character.
Wistful emerged from the dissolution of Arges, carrying forward the same creative nucleus but shifting toward a more expressive and textural sound. As a multi‑instrumentalist, ClĂ©ment uses guitars, bass, drums, piano, cello, and voice to construct dense emotional landscapes. The project’s thematic core is melancholy, expressed through layered distortion, fragile melodies, and a sense of longing that permeates every composition.
Wistful’s style blends:
The use of Portuguese lyrics adds a confessional tone, making the music feel both personal and culturally rooted.
Wistful’s two full‑length albums trace a clear artistic progression:
Across both releases, Wistful maintains a consistent aesthetic: melancholic, immersive, and deeply personal.
Wistful stands as one of Portugal’s most distinctive blackgaze projects, notable for:
The project remains active and continues to evolve under ClĂ©ment’s singular vision.
