Xerbittert emerged from the Moscow underground in 2009 as a solitary, uncompromising vision of raw ambient black metal shaped entirely by the multi‑instrumentalist Monork. The project quickly became known for its prolific early output, releasing multiple full‑lengths, demos, and EPs within a single year. Xerbittert’s sound is defined by bleak minimalism, hypnotic repetition, and a suffocating atmosphere that draws from depressive black metal, ritual ambient, and the lo‑fi isolationism of projects like Xasthur—whom Xerbittert explicitly honored with a cover on Dark Procession.

The year 2010 marked the project’s most intense creative surge, producing Dark Procession, Hymn to Oppressive Void, and Secrecy, each exploring different shades of desolation: from cavernous ambient passages to harsh, frostbitten riffs and distant, ghostlike vocals. Reviews across underground zines often described the music as “monochromatic yet immersive,” praising its ability to evoke vast, empty spaces and oppressive emotional weight. Despite the deliberately primitive production, listeners noted a strong sense of thematic cohesion and a distinctive personal aesthetic.

Xerbittert continued to refine its approach with Monotone Hymns (2012), an album frequently cited by fans as the project’s most focused and atmospheric work. The release Shelter in Oblivion further emphasized ambient structures and meditative bleakness, showing Monork’s increasing interest in dissolving traditional black metal forms. The project also engaged in collaborative releases, including splits with Taarma and Moon, both respected names in the raw and depressive black metal underground.

In 2013, Xerbittert transitioned into a new entity, Tsathogguath, marking a shift toward darker, more ritualistic and Lovecraft‑inspired aesthetics while maintaining the solitary, uncompromising spirit of the original project. Despite the name change, the Xerbittert era remains a cult chapter in Russian atmospheric black metal—valued for its stark authenticity, relentless productivity, and the unique sonic world crafted by a single creator working in total isolation.
