Зимний Дракон (“Zimniy Drakon” / Winter Dragon) emerged in 2013 as one of the many atmospheric black metal incarnations of the hyper‑prolific Russian musician WV, a figure known for shaping dozens of raw, lo‑fi, and deeply personal black metal projects across the Russian underground. Even within his vast catalogue, Зимний Дракон stands out for its blend of icy ambient textures, melancholic riffing, and a mythic, wandering spirit that evokes frozen landscapes and solitary journeys.
The debut The Last Journey (2013) immediately established the project’s aesthetic: long, drifting compositions, minimalistic percussion, and a sense of mournful transcendence. The album was noted in underground circles for its immersive atmosphere—less aggressive than many of WV’s other works, leaning instead toward meditative coldness and ambient‑driven storytelling.
The Dungeons EP (2014) explored darker, more dungeon‑synth‑leaning territory, weaving minimalist keyboard passages with distant black metal elements. This release hinted at WV’s growing interest in merging ambient fantasy soundscapes with raw black metal foundations.
Winter’s Curse (2014) returned to a more traditional atmospheric black metal structure, with sharper riffs and a stronger sense of narrative flow. Listeners often described it as one of the project’s most emotionally resonant works, capturing both sorrow and a quiet, wintry grandeur.
The year 2015 marked the project’s most prolific phase, producing three full‑lengths: Gnashing of the Dead Legend’s Voice, Vitar’s Book, and the monumental When Eternity Calls for Your Ashes, It Will Return Your True Name. These albums showcased WV’s characteristic intensity—rapid creation, raw production, and a stream‑of‑consciousness approach that favored atmosphere over technical refinement. The music from this period is often described as mythic, dreamlike, and steeped in a sense of ancient, half‑remembered lore.
In 2015, Зимний Дракон evolved into Theoroth, continuing the same spiritual and atmospheric lineage under a new name. WV remained the sole creator until his passing in 2023, leaving behind an enormous legacy across the Russian black metal underground. Зимний Дракон stands as one of his most evocative and atmospheric incarnations—an ode to winter, solitude, and the mythic imagination.
