Lyset was a short‑lived atmospheric black metal and dark ambient project from Galicia, active only between 2012 and 2013 but leaving behind an intense and emotionally charged body of work. Their music blended raw, depressive black metal with ethereal ambient textures, creating a sound steeped in melancholy, nocturnal atmospheres, and introspective darkness. The project’s themes—depression, anti‑Christian sentiment, dreams, and the natural world—were expressed through lo‑fi production, distant screams, and cold, mist‑shrouded guitar lines that echoed the solitary landscapes of Galicia.
The project was driven primarily by Amarok, who handled vocals, guitars, bass, and drum programming. His compositions leaned heavily into hypnotic repetition, bleak melodic phrasing, and a suffocating sense of emotional isolation. In 2013, Lyset briefly expanded with the addition of Atroz on vocals, known for his involvement in numerous extreme underground acts, adding an even harsher and more tortured vocal dimension to the project.
Lyset’s discography is unusually prolific for such a short existence. Their debut full‑length Reverie (2013) introduced their atmospheric and depressive approach, weaving ambient passages into raw black metal structures. The demo Vi som hater guden deres (2013) pushed further into anti‑religious themes with a colder, more primitive sound. The EP From the Mist ov the Past (2013) explored dreamlike and ambient territories, while their second full‑length In the Light of the Rising Moon (2013) offered a more expansive and emotionally layered work, blending mournful melodies with immersive dark ambient interludes.
Their cover of “Dunkelheit” for the Tribute to Burzum compilation (2013) highlighted their affinity for the second‑wave black metal aesthetic, reinterpreting the classic track through their own depressive and atmospheric lens.
Though Lyset disbanded shortly after their burst of releases, their work remains a snapshot of the early‑2010s Iberian depressive and atmospheric black metal underground—raw, intimate, and deeply rooted in emotional and spiritual desolation.
