Ău is one of the most iconic and enduring bands in Spanish rock and heavy metal. Founded in Madrid in 1974 after the dissolution of Fresa, the groupâled by the irrepressible JosĂ© Carlos Molinaâbecame a cornerstone of Spanish folkâinfused progressive rock and later a key influence on the development of Spanish heavy metal.
Ău’s sound is unmistakable: medievalâtinged flute lines, hardârock guitar riffs, progressive structures, and lyrics that oscillate between social critique, fantasy, and psychological turmoil. Molina’s flute became the band’s signature, earning them comparisons to Jethro Tull, though Ău’s approach was heavier, darker, and uniquely Iberian.
The band’s early years produced several classics of Spanish rock:
- Cuentos de ayer y de hoy (1978), a foundational album of Spanish prog/folk rock
- A golpe de lĂĄtigo (1980)
- Fuego (1983)
- Acorralado por ti (1984)
- El mensaje del mago (1987)
- Vamos al lĂo!! (1988)
Ău’s history is marked by constant lineup changesâdozens of musicians have passed through the band, many of whom later became major figures in Spanish rock and metal (Rosendo Mercado, Jero Ramiro, Niko del Hierro, and many others). Molina has remained the sole permanent member and creative force.
The 1990s and 2000s saw a prolific period of studio albums, compilations, and live releases, including La danza de las mil tierras (1994), Veinte años y un dĂa (1995), La taberna encantada (1997), Cuatro gatos (2000), RĂ©quiem (2002), and TĂteres (2003).
In the 2010s and 2020s, Ău experienced a lateâcareer resurgence with new studio work, major live releases, and a revitalized lineup. Their 2023 album Yo estoy vivo reaffirmed Molina’s enduring creative energy, followed by a string of singles in 2023â2024.
Ău remains a living institutionâone of the longestârunning and most influential bands in Spanish rock history, bridging progressive rock, folk, and heavy metal across five decades.
