Sanctuary is a symphonic black metal band formed in 2006 in Paris, Île-de-France. The project blends traditional black metal foundations with orchestral arrangements, dramatic atmospheres, and a melodic sensibility that emphasizes contrast and intensity. Although their thematic focus has not been formally defined, their work often explores grandiose, dark, and introspective moods shaped by symphonic layering and sharp vocal delivery. Active independently since their formation, Sanctuary has built a steady presence within the French underground through a series of EPs and full-length albums, as well as compilation appearances such as “Rise of the Unpossessed Self” on Le Sampler RockHard 217 in 2021. The band is not to be confused with the 1984 Parisian Sanctuary or the hardcore band from Normandy.
