Vrisak (“the scream”) was a Serbian folk/black metal project active between 2011 and 2019, rooted in the dual landscapes of Belgrade and the southern town of VuÄŤje. The band emerged during a period of renewed interest in Balkan‑infused black metal, blending raw traditional black metal foundations with elements of Slavic folk, mythic storytelling, and philosophical introspection. Their music carried a distinctly regional character—dark, earthy, and steeped in the imagery of forests, storms, and ancestral memory.
The project introduced itself through the singles “Kiša” and “Nebo” in 2011, both of which showcased Vrisak’s early aesthetic: cold, melodic black metal enriched with folk‑tinged atmospheres and lyrical themes revolving around nature’s cruelty, cosmic darkness, and the metaphysical struggle between good and evil. These early tracks circulated widely in the Serbian underground, earning the band a small but dedicated following.
After several years of silence, Vrisak resurfaced in 2018 with a new series of singles—“Okovi,” “Praskozorje,” and “Tajna”—revealing a more mature and atmospheric direction. The music became more melodic and introspective, with stronger folk influences and a clearer narrative focus. These songs explored themes of dawn, hidden knowledge, and the chains of fate, reflecting a shift toward philosophical and symbolic storytelling. The production also grew more refined, balancing harshness with a sense of mystic melancholy.
The final single, “Okot” (2019), marked the end of the project. By this point, Vrisak had developed a recognizable identity within the Serbian underground: a band that merged black metal aggression with folk‑inspired melodies and lyrical depth, without ever releasing a full‑length album. Their work remains a snapshot of a transitional era in the regional scene, where many artists experimented with blending traditional Balkan aesthetics and extreme metal.
Although Vrisak disbanded quietly, their small discography continues to circulate among listeners who appreciate raw, atmospheric folk/black metal with a distinctly Serbian spirit.
