Biography

Black Sunrise is a melodic black metal band from Potenza and Rome, Italy, formed in 1994 and considered one of the seminal forces in the Lucanian occult metal scene. In the summer of 1996, Valkus (Valkiria) was invited to serve as live vocalist — a brief but pivotal role that linked Black Sunrise to the emerging triad of Obscure Devotion, Valkiria, and Ecnephias.

Founded in the early 1990s, Black Sunrise carved a path through themes of darkness, anti-Christianity, carnality, and natural landscapes, blending melodic black metal with atmospheric and gothic elements. Their early compilation appearances, including Nocturnal Symphonies Vol. 1 and Fallen Angel #2, positioned them within Italy’s rising underground.

The summer of 1996 marked a key moment: Valkus, already active in the Lucanian scene, was summoned to perform live vocals for the band. Though his tenure was short, his presence helped elevate the band’s ritual intensity and aligned them with the esoteric current that would soon manifest in Valkiria. This collaboration placed Black Sunrise at the heart of a constellation that included Obscure Devotion and Ecnephias — three projects that would define the spiritual and sonic identity of Basilicata’s black metal underground.

Today, Black Sunrise remains active under Forces of Satan Records, continuing to channel their original vision with a lineup that includes Valerio V., Astius, and Kerberos
