1389 was a raw black metal project rooted initially in Banja Luka, Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and later based in Rijeka, Croatia. Conceived as an overtly National Socialist black metal entity, the band took its name from the year of the Battle of Kosovo, using Balkan history, war, and ethnic mythology as a central symbolic framework. From the outset, 1389 embraced a deliberately primitive, lo-fi sound and a fiercely underground mode of operation, circulating material through small labels, tape/CD-R editions, and a dense network of international splits and compilations.

The project was driven entirely by Vožd Jovan Pogani (Marko Pilipović), who handled all instruments, vocals, and songwriting. Under his direction, 1389 became known for extremely prolific output: a rapid succession of demos in 2008 established the project’s raw, hostile aesthetic, while early releases underlined its explicit far-right and antisemitic stance. The music typically features harsh, trebly guitars, minimalistic drumming, and distant, reverb-soaked vocals, often recorded with intentionally crude production to emphasize atmosphere over clarity. Lyrically, 1389 combined National Socialist ideology with themes of Slavic paganism, winter landscapes, misanthropy, and war, positioning itself firmly within the NSBM underground rather than the broader black metal scene.

In 2009, 1389 released a trio of full-lengths—“Ledena pustoš,” “Zima,” and “Povratak”—which are often cited as the core documents of the project’s early era. These albums expanded on the frosty, repetitive riffing and bleak melodic lines hinted at on the demos, while still retaining a rehearsal-like rawness. Over the following years, 1389 became heavily involved in split releases with other extremist and underground acts from Europe and beyond, reinforcing its role in a transnational NSBM network. Releases such as “Windhorst,” the numerous themed splits (e.g. “Fuck You All, We Are NSBM!!!”, “Satanic Forest / Kolac / 1389 / Eris,” “Deep Darkness Devotion,” and later “Profane Endless Darkness”) further entrenched the project’s reputation as a staunchly ideological, uncompromising raw black metal outlet.

Throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, 1389 continued to issue singles, demos, compilations, and splits at a relentless pace, often in very limited editions. The project’s discography reflects a continuous evolution within a narrow stylistic frame: from stark, icy minimalism to slightly more structured, riff-driven compositions, but always anchored in raw production and militant, propagandistic themes. Later works such as “Zloslutni četinari Srpske,” “Kristalna noć,” and the “Kali-Yuga” material show the project extending its conceptual reach into broader apocalyptic and esoteric territory (e.g. references to Kali Yuga and “Om namah Shivaya”), while still tied to its original ideological core.

By the mid-2020s, Vožd Jovan Pogani publicly ended all his projects except Jarac, effectively closing the chapter on 1389 after nearly two decades of activity (including the earlier incarnation Black SS Vomit). The project remains controversial due to its explicit National Socialist and antisemitic content, and its releases circulate primarily within dedicated collectors’ circles and extremist black metal networks. Musically, 1389 is often cited as a quintessential example of Balkan raw/NS black metal: cold, repetitive, ideologically charged, and deeply embedded in the underground tape-trading and micro-label culture that sustained it from 2008 to 2026.
