Anapilis was an experimental Lithuanian project from Kaunas, active from 1998 into the early 2000s, known for its unusual evolution from black/folk metal into darkwave and avant‑garde soundscapes. The name itself refers to the Lithuanian concept of the afterlife, and the band’s music consistently reflected themes of metaphysics, philosophical inquiry, and the liminal space between life and death. Rather than adhering to a single stylistic identity, Anapilis functioned as a creative collective centered around Vertigo Necrozak, who handled vocals, bass, and programming.

The earliest material, including the 2001 single Dausos... gyvenimo pilnatvė, leaned toward atmospheric black/folk metal with ritualistic undertones. The music incorporated melancholic melodies, primitive black metal riffing, and folk‑inflected passages, echoing the Lithuanian pagan/romantic tradition while maintaining a raw underground edge. These early works placed Anapilis alongside other Baltic acts exploring national mysticism and philosophical themes.

By the time of the Lunar Optics EP (2002), the project had begun shifting toward a more experimental, darkwave‑oriented sound. The compositions became more synthetic and introspective, with programmed percussion, ambient layers, and a stronger emphasis on mood rather than aggression. This stylistic transformation reflected the diverse backgrounds of the musicians involved—several members were active in gothic rock, avant‑folk, and experimental scenes, and their influence pushed Anapilis into increasingly unconventional territory.

The final known release, the Anapilis / Valefar split (2002), marked the project’s most atmospheric and esoteric phase. The material blended darkwave, ambient electronics, and ritualistic vocals, creating a somber, otherworldly soundscape. The split is also notable for featuring Lord Ominous (R.I.P. 2002), a respected figure in the Lithuanian underground known for his work with Anubi and Valefar. His presence added a layer of historical and emotional weight to the release, as it stands among his final recorded contributions.

After 2002, Anapilis quietly dissolved. Members moved on to other significant Lithuanian projects—Luctus, Xess, LiĹ«nuosna, Siela, and others—leaving Anapilis as a brief but intriguing chapter in the evolution of Lithuania’s experimental and atmospheric metal scene. Though short‑lived, the project is remembered for its stylistic fluidity, philosophical depth, and its role in bridging black metal with darkwave and avant‑garde expression.
