Ancient Hatred emerged from Tallinn in 1995 as one of the earliest and most notorious NSBM projects in Estonia. Operating within the international Ironforest circle—a loose network of ideologically aligned bands such as Aryan Honour, Bloodstrength, Fortress of Frost, Heimdallr, Haustmyrkr, Older North, and Wreterdess—the project positioned itself firmly within the extremist fringe of the black metal underground. Their music followed the raw, aggressive template of mid‑90s black metal: harsh production, repetitive tremolo riffing, and a vocal delivery steeped in hostility and provocation.
The band’s early demos Aryan (1996) and Ancient Hatred (1997) established their sonic and ideological identity, circulating primarily through tape‑trading networks and small underground distros. In 1997, the EP A New Horizon expanded their reach within the NSBM scene, while the 1999 full‑length Make Them Suffer marked their first major statement—a crude but forceful work that reflected the uncompromising ethos of the Ironforest circle. Reviews in underground zines of the time noted the band’s intensity and ideological extremity, situating them firmly within the most radical wing of Eastern European black metal.
The early 2000s saw a period of heightened activity, with releases such as Still Strong (2000), We Stand United (2002), and Forever We Are (2004). These works continued the band’s raw stylistic approach, emphasizing militant themes and a confrontational aesthetic. Their 2005 output—Our Word (single), Elite (demo), and the split Rassenkrieg—represented the final phase of the project’s activity. After this period, Ancient Hatred faded from the scene, with no official disbandment announced.
Despite their limited musical evolution, Ancient Hatred became a recognizable name within the NSBM underground due to their prolific output and association with Ironforest. Their work remains part of the historical record of Estonia’s extreme metal scene, though firmly confined to the ideological margins of the genre.
