Angis was a Kaunas‑based metal band active primarily between 1996 and 2004, remembered for its transition from early doom/death metal into a harsher pagan black metal style. Emerging during a formative period for the Lithuanian underground, Angis developed alongside bands such as Xess, LiĹ«nuosna, and Poccolus, sharing members and creative energy with many of the scene’s most influential acts. Their music reflected a distinctly Baltic sensibility—somber, ritualistic, and rooted in pre‑Christian myth.
The debut demo Prieš aušrÄ… (1998) captured the band’s earliest incarnation: slow, heavy doom/death metal with pagan overtones, deep growls, and a raw, melancholic atmosphere. The sound was primitive but evocative, shaped by thick guitar lines and a sense of looming darkness. By the time of their second demo, Praeities Ĺľenklai (2001), Angis had shifted decisively toward pagan black metal. The riffs became sharper and more aggressive, the tempos faster, and the vocals harsher, while still retaining the melodic undertones and spiritual themes that defined their identity. The demo is often regarded as their strongest work, reflecting both improved musicianship and a clearer artistic direction.
Angis disbanded in 2004, with members dispersing into numerous other Lithuanian projects—Luctus, Xess, LiĹ«nuosna, Dreamland Poetry, and others—cementing the band’s role as a creative hub within the scene. In 2015, Angis briefly reunited for a series of exclusive live performances, revisiting their pagan black metal era and reaffirming their cult status among long‑time followers of Lithuanian underground metal.
Though their discography is small, Angis remains a respected name for its contribution to the early development of Lithuanian pagan metal and for the influential musicians who passed through its ranks.
