Angro Mainju was an obscure and short‑lived black metal project from Rokiškis, Lithuania, active during the mid‑1990s and remembered primarily for its sole demo Mors Sua – Vita Nostra (1996). The band’s name references Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit of Zoroastrian cosmology, and this esoteric foundation shaped the project’s thematic direction—occultism, metaphysical duality, and the darker forces of spiritual conflict.

Musically, Angro Mainju embodied the raw, primitive character of early Lithuanian black metal. Their sound was harsh, unpolished, and steeped in the lo‑fi aesthetics typical of the era: buzzing guitars, minimalistic drumming, and a cold, ritualistic atmosphere. The demo’s compositions relied on repetitive tremolo riffs, sparse keyboard textures, and a vocal delivery that alternated between rasped invocations and deeper, more cavernous tones. This approach placed the band within the same early underground lineage as acts like Anubi, Valefar, and other proto‑Lithuanian black metal entities experimenting with occult and mystical themes.

Mors Sua – Vita Nostra remains the band’s only known release. Though extremely limited and largely forgotten outside collectors and regional tape‑trading circles, the demo is notable for its bleak atmosphere and its attempt to merge raw black metal with subtle dark ambient elements. The presence of keyboards—used sparingly but effectively—added a spectral layer uncommon in many Lithuanian demos of the time.

The lineup consisted of three members: Hedamu on bass and vocals, Lord on drums, and Typhonus handling guitars, keyboards, and additional vocals. Their combined backgrounds connected Angro Mainju to the broader Lithuanian underground, particularly through Typhonus, whose multi‑instrumental role shaped the project’s occult, atmospheric edge.

After the 1996 demo, the band disappeared without further releases or public activity. Despite its brief existence, Angro Mainju remains a small but intriguing fragment of Lithuania’s early black metal history—raw, esoteric, and firmly rooted in the tape‑trading mystique of the 1990s.
