Arjen is one of the central pillars of the Bosnian Black Plague Circle, a collective known for its uncompromising, hostile and deeply atmospheric approach to black metal. Emerging from Sarajevo in 2012, Arjen was founded as the personal vision of H.P., a prolific multi‑instrumentalist involved in numerous underground projects. From the beginning, Arjen positioned itself within the raw, chaotic and spiritually corrosive branch of Balkan black metal, drawing from the region’s tradition of lo‑fi extremity while developing a distinct voice rooted in dissonance, repetition and psychological decay.

The early demo Dreams of Another Purpose (2013) introduced Arjen’s foundational aesthetic: cold, minimalistic riffing, distant screams and a suffocating atmosphere that emphasized trance‑like repetition over technicality. The EP Kada duša uĹľiva u praznini (2015) expanded this formula with sharper production and a more aggressive rhythmic pulse, while still maintaining the bleak, nihilistic tone that would become the project’s signature.

Arjen’s first full‑length, Sve se raspada (2015), marked a turning point. The album was widely noted in underground circles for its oppressive atmosphere and its ability to merge raw black metal with a sense of existential collapse. The songwriting became more deliberate, with longer compositions that built tension through layering and subtle shifts rather than overt climaxes. Critics and listeners within the underground praised the record for its emotional intensity and its refusal to compromise.

The split Gateway to the Monolith of Dreams (2017) further solidified Arjen’s position within the Black Plague Circle, showcasing the project’s ability to stand alongside other key acts in the collective. By the time Kad se slika iskrivi dovoljno (2018) arrived, Arjen had fully embraced a more expansive and atmospheric sound—still raw, but with a clearer sense of structure and thematic cohesion. The album explored distorted perceptions, spiritual disintegration and the collapse of identity, themes that recur throughout H.P.’s work.

The EP Nikada nije kasno da propadneš (2020) and the full‑length Lice ÄŤovjeka koji je rekao ne (2022) demonstrated Arjen’s continued evolution. The latter, in particular, was received as one of the project’s strongest statements: a bleak, introspective and emotionally charged record that blended harsh black metal with moments of almost meditative atmosphere. The vocals became more tortured and expressive, the riffs more hypnotic, and the overall sound more immersive. Many underground reviewers highlighted the album as a standout release within the Balkan scene.

In 2025, the compilation Konce iznad mene Ä‘avo drĹľi gathered rare and unreleased material, offering a broader view of Arjen’s development and reaffirming the project’s importance within the regional and international underground. Throughout its existence, Arjen has remained fiercely independent in spirit, even while working with respected labels like Signal Rex. The project’s connection to the Black Plague Circle—alongside Cave Ritual, Deathcircle, Nigrum Ignis Circuli, Night’s Majesty, Niteris, Obskuritatem, Sulphuric Night, Suša, Void Prayer and Vrač—places it within one of the most influential and enigmatic black metal collectives of the last decade.

Arjen’s music is defined by its emotional violence, its philosophical fixation on death and chaos, and its refusal to soften its edges for broader appeal. It stands as a testament to the strength of the Bosnian underground: raw, uncompromising and spiritually corrosive.
