Asgard were a short‑lived but memorable Viking/black metal band from Genk, Limburg, active during two distinct periods: 1996–2000 and a brief revival from late 2003 until their final split on September 30th, 2004. Their music drew heavily from the Scandinavian wave of the mid‑90s, blending raw black metal aggression with heroic, Viking‑themed atmospheres. Though their discography is small, Asgard remain a cult name within the Belgian underground due to their sincerity, youthful intensity, and the turbulent history behind their formation.
The band’s origins trace back to Hysarty, a doom metal group formed by David, Benjamin, Dominique, Steven, and Kris. Over time, David and Benjamin grew dissatisfied with doom metal and gravitated toward black and Viking metal. This stylistic shift caused a split within Hysarty, leading Dominique, Steven, and Kris to leave the project. David and Benjamin then rebuilt the band with new members, transforming Hysarty into Asgard—a name that reflected their new mythological and war‑driven direction.
Their only known release, the demo In to War (1997), captured the raw essence of their sound: primitive black metal riffing, warlike rhythms, and lyrics steeped in Viking lore. The demo circulated through tape‑trading networks and helped establish Asgard as part of Belgium’s small but passionate black metal scene of the late 90s.
Internal changes and instability led to their first breakup in 2000. However, the band unexpectedly reformed in December 2003 with renewed enthusiasm, only to dissolve again less than a year later. Despite this brief second life, no new recordings emerged, and Asgard ultimately remained a one‑demo cult act—remembered for their authenticity, their roots in the Belgian underground, and their connection to the early days of local black metal.
