Askens Dod is a depressive black metal project from ChiČinÄu, active briefly between 2021 and 2022 before entering a hiatus and briefly continuing under the name The Last Sunset. Created by Moldovan multiāinstrumentalist Igor Savciuc, the project explored themes of death, emotional collapse, and existential suffering through a raw, melancholic sound rooted in the DSBM tradition. Askens Dod’s music is characterized by cold, minimalistic guitar lines, distant screams, and an atmosphere of isolation that reflects the bleak emotional landscapes central to the genre.
The project’s sole fullālength, Symbiosis of Life and Death (2021), presented a deeply introspective work built on sorrowful melodies and depressive ambience. The album’s tone is stark and unfiltered, relying on loāfi production and repetitive structures to evoke a sense of hopelessness and internal decay. Within the Moldovan underground, the release gained attention for its sincerity and emotional weight, standing out as one of the region’s few contributions to the depressive black metal style.
In 2022, Askens Dod briefly shifted identity under the name The Last Sunset, continuing Igor Savciuc’s exploration of despair and existential themes before the project was placed on hold. Savciuc himself is an active figure in the Moldovan extreme metal scene, involved in several other projects including Dying Raven, Aserintel, and White Warrior, each reflecting different facets of his musical and thematic interests.
Though shortālived, Askens Dod remains a notable entry in Moldova’s emerging black metal landscape, representing a rare and emotionally intense expression of DSBM within the region.
