Askheimr is a Norwegian melodic black/death metal project founded in 2016 and centered around Mathias Hemmingby (also known for Eldamar), who originally conceived it as a one‑man band. The project’s name refers to the old name of Askim, Hemmingby’s hometown, anchoring the music in a sense of personal geography and northern atmosphere. Early recordings were crafted entirely by Hemmingby between 2018 and 2019, resulting in the first two singles—Eternal Confinement and River of Fire (both 2019)—which introduced a sound defined by melancholic tremolo lines, cold melodic phrasing, and a strong atmospheric undercurrent.

Over time, Askheimr expanded into a full lineup, with musicians such as Erlend Andersen (guitars), Ola Flatebø Sørensen (bass), Karelius Johansen (drums), and Astor Sigmundstad (keyboards) contributing to the project’s evolution into a more complete melodic black metal ensemble.This broader formation culminated in the self‑titled full‑length Askheimr (2023), a work that deepened the project’s emotional and atmospheric range while retaining the introspective, nature‑bound character of the early material.

Askheimr’s music blends melodic black metal, atmospheric textures, and death‑metal weight, often evoking solitary Nordic landscapes, inner turmoil, and a sense of mythic distance. Remaining fully independent, the project has built a following through its stark visual aesthetic, immersive songwriting, and the distinctive melodic sensibility that links it to Hemmingby’s wider creative universe.
