Azazel was a raw and aggressive Luxembourgish black metal band formed in 2004 in Remich, active during the mid‑2000s and remembered for its harsh, war‑driven aesthetic. Their music embraced the violent, primitive edge of early black metal—cold riffs, relentless drumming, and a vocal approach steeped in hatred and satanic imagery. Within Luxembourg’s small but dedicated extreme metal scene, Azazel stood out for its uncompromising sound and militant thematic focus.
The band’s first release, the 2005 demo Thorns of Evil, is notable for having been issued twice due to the extremely poor sound quality of the initial edition—a testament to the raw, DIY nature of the project. Despite its roughness, the demo circulated in the underground and helped establish Azazel’s presence. Their only full‑length, Black War (2007), expanded on their themes of conflict, destruction, and anti‑religious hostility, delivering a more structured but still fiercely abrasive sound.
Azazel operated as a duo, with Panzerfaust handling drums and Blagod performing guitars and vocals. Their collaboration produced a sound that was direct, hostile, and rooted in the early traditions of European black metal. Panzerfaust’s later involvement in Dreadnought further connects Azazel to Luxembourg’s broader extreme metal lineage.
The band eventually dissolved, leaving behind a small but potent discography that captures a specific moment in Luxembourg’s underground—raw, unfiltered, and driven by pure black metal aggression.
