Azgard was a Celtic folk metal band from Lausanne, active between 2003 and 2009, known for blending melodic metal with traditional folk instrumentation and themes inspired by northern European myth. Their name references Ásgarðr, the realm of the Æsir in Norse mythology, signaling the band’s interest in mythic storytelling and ancient cultural imagery. Despite their short lifespan and limited discography, Azgard developed a recognizable identity within the Swiss folk‑metal underground, characterized by energetic melodies, bagpipes, violin passages, and a raw, youthful approach to songwriting.

The band’s only official release, Demo 2008, captures the essence of their sound: bright, folk‑driven melodies layered over metal riffing, supported by dynamic percussion and expressive vocals. The demo showcases the interplay between guitars, violin, and bagpipes—an instrumental palette that set Azgard apart from many local contemporaries. While the production retains a rough, underground character, the material hints at a band with strong melodic instincts and a clear vision rooted in Celtic and pagan aesthetics.

Azgard’s lineup featured multi‑instrumentalists who contributed to the band’s rich folk textures. Matthieu Orioli’s combination of vocals, violin, and guitars formed the emotional core of the music, while Adrien Doerig’s use of bagpipes added a distinctly Celtic flavor. The dual‑guitar foundation provided by Doerig and Frédéric Stauber gave the band both melodic lift and rhythmic weight. Their live performances were known for their spirited, celebratory atmosphere, reflecting the communal energy often associated with folk‑metal scenes.

Although the band disbanded in 2009, Azgard remains a small but memorable part of the Swiss folk‑metal landscape. Their work represents an early wave of Swiss musicians experimenting with Celtic influences, blending traditional sounds with metal’s intensity. Their members later moved on to other musical endeavors, carrying forward elements of Azgard’s melodic and folk‑driven spirit.
