Benetan were a Basque heavy/folk metal band active around the late 1990s, remembered primarily for their sole full‑length Aho zabalik (1999). Though details about their formation and active years are scarce, the band stood out within the Biscay scene for their integration of traditional Basque instrumentation—especially txalaparta and horns—into a heavy metal framework. This gave their music a distinctly local identity, blending melodic metal with folk textures and multi‑vocal arrangements.
Their sound leaned toward warm, earthy folk metal rather than the later, more bombastic European folk metal wave. The presence of multiple vocalists and traditional percussion created a communal, celebratory atmosphere, while electric guitars and bass anchored the music in classic heavy metal. Aho zabalik remains their only known release, but it captures a moment when Basque folk traditions and metal energy intersected in a raw, authentic way.
Benetan eventually disbanded, leaving behind a single album and a lineup composed of musicians who were deeply connected to the Basque cultural and musical landscape.
