Bleak is a Luxembourgish black metal band founded in 2008, known for its cold, apocalyptic atmosphere and fixation on themes of decay, pestilence, and cosmic ruin. Their sound is rooted in traditional black metal but shaped by a distinctly modern sense of vastness and existential collapse. Bleak’s music leans into long, oppressive structures, dissonant riffing, and a vocal delivery that feels both ritualistic and feral—an aesthetic that mirrors their thematic obsession with the downfall of humanity and the indifferent violence of the universe.
The band’s first active period (2008–?) culminated in the release of their debut full‑length Magna Mortalitas in 2017. The album is a dense, suffocating work that explores plague, extinction, and the insignificance of mankind against cosmic forces. Its atmosphere is bleak in the truest sense: cold, hostile, and stripped of hope. After a period of silence, Bleak reactivated in 2022 with the original creative nucleus intact, continuing to develop their vision of cosmic black metal infused with apocalyptic dread.
Bleak’s lineup has remained anchored by Hrimthur, whose vocals and guitar work define the band’s sonic identity. The rhythm section solidified in 2013 with the arrival of Naberios on bass and Bathym on drums—both musicians deeply embedded in Luxembourg’s extreme metal scene. Their combined experience gives Bleak a tight, cohesive sound despite the band’s long periods of inactivity.
