Cave Ritual is one of the foundational entities of the Bosnian Black Plague Circle, a collective known for its hostile, atmospheric and deeply esoteric approach to black metal. Emerging in the early 2010s, Cave Ritual first operated as a raw, cavernous black metal project before transforming into Void Prayer in 2014. While Void Prayer became one of the most acclaimed acts in the Balkan underground, Cave Ritual itself was resurrected in 2020 as an autonomous project, continuing the lineage of bleak, ritualistic black metal that defined its earliest recordings.

The original Cave Ritual era (pre‑2014) was marked by a series of demos and splits that circulated heavily in tape‑trading circles. The self‑titled demo Cave Ritual (2012) introduced the project’s core aesthetic: suffocating atmosphere, hypnotic riff repetition, distant screams and a production style that emphasized decay and claustrophobia. The splits with Carved Cross and Folteraar (both 2013) connected Cave Ritual to the international raw black metal underground, pairing the Bosnian project with similarly uncompromising acts known for their lo‑fi extremity.

In 2014, Cave Ritual released two more splits—one with Deathcircle and another titled Her Black Fullmoon Shines / Remains of Something Once Called Life—before the project officially changed its name to Void Prayer. These final pre‑Void Prayer recordings are often regarded as essential documents of the early Black Plague Circle sound: bleak, trance‑inducing, and spiritually corrosive.

After several years of activity under the Void Prayer name, Cave Ritual was revived in 2020 as a separate entity. This rebirth marked a return to the project’s roots, with a renewed focus on raw atmosphere and ritualistic composition. The 2017 compilation Cave Ritual gathered the early material into a single release, preserving the project’s formative era and solidifying its cult status among collectors of Balkan black metal.

Cave Ritual’s sound is defined by its oppressive minimalism: long, droning riffs, cavernous ambience, and a sense of spiritual desolation that permeates every recording. The project’s connection to the Black Plague Circle—alongside Arjen, Deathcircle, Nigrum Ignis Circuli, Night’s Majesty, Niteris, Obskuritatem, Sulphuric Night, Suša, Void Prayer and Vrač—places it within one of the most influential and enigmatic black metal collectives of the last decade.

The current incarnation of Cave Ritual is driven by musicians deeply embedded in the Bosnian underground, many of whom are active across numerous interconnected projects. Their collective experience and shared aesthetic vision give Cave Ritual a continuity of spirit despite its periods of transformation and dormancy.
