Cor Scorpii is a melodic black metal band from Sogndal, Norway, founded in 2004 by Gaute Refsnes, formerly the keyboardist of Windir. The project was born directly from Windir’s dissolution after the death of Terje “Valfar” Bakken, with several former members carrying forward the musical spirit of Sogndal’s black‑metal tradition. The name means “Heart of the Scorpion”, an ancient designation for the star Antares, chosen for its mysterious, atmospheric resonance and its alignment with the band’s lyrical focus on death and the afterlife.

Their early demo Attergangar (2005) established a sound rooted in Windir’s melodic heritage but darker, more somber, and more classically structured. The debut album Monument (2008) expanded this identity with sweeping keyboards, intricate guitar work, and a strong sense of Norwegian melodic melancholy. A decade later, Ruin (2018) refined their approach with greater emotional depth and compositional maturity, blending harshness and melody into a cohesive, atmospheric whole.

Across their career, Cor Scorpii have remained tied to the Sogndal lineage—sharing members, history, and aesthetic DNA with Windir and Mistur—while carving out their own distinct voice: colder, more introspective, and steeped in themes of mortality, fate, and the shadowed spaces between life and death. Their work stands as one of the strongest continuations of the region’s melodic black‑metal legacy, carried forward under Dark Essence Records.
