Cromleh emerged from the Galați underground in 2002 under the name Sepulcral, initially exploring raw black metal before shifting toward a more melodic, keyboard‑driven symphonic black metal identity. In 2004 the band adopted the name Cromleh, marking a clearer artistic direction defined by dramatic keyboard layers, tremolo‑picked riffing, and a lyrical focus rooted in Christian mysticism and confrontational theological themes. Their music stood apart in the Romanian scene for its combination of spiritual motifs and a cold, traditional black metal backbone.
The group remained active in the local circuit throughout the mid‑2000s, performing in small clubs and sharing stages with other rising Romanian extreme metal acts. Live recordings circulating online show a band leaning heavily on atmosphere, with keyboards providing a liturgical tone over harsh vocals and mid‑tempo black metal structures. Despite their potential, Cromleh never secured a label deal and operated entirely independently.
Their sole official release, the 2007 demo Denunțul trădării, captures the band at their most cohesive. Across its four tracks—“Călugăr Auster,” “În Coasa Mea,” “Suflet de Prunc,” and “Oda Soldatului Muribund”—the demo blends somber melodies with martial rhythms and a distinctly Romanian sense of melancholy. While the production is raw, the songwriting hints at a larger symphonic vision that was never fully realized due to the band’s dissolution. Over time, the demo has gained minor cult status among collectors of obscure Eastern European black metal, especially given the later prominence of some members in other Romanian acts.
Cromleh quietly disbanded not long after the demo’s release, leaving behind a small but intriguing footprint in Romania’s early 2000s symphonic black metal landscape.
