Dark Alchemy is a one‑man atmospheric folk/post‑black metal project from the Bragança district, created in 2016 by Isaac Filipe, a multi‑instrumentalist whose work blends naturalistic melancholy with a stark sense of emotional emptiness. From its earliest phase, the project has been rooted in a solitary creative process, with Filipe handling all instrumentation and composition, shaping a sound that moves between mist‑covered folk passages, raw atmospheric black metal, and later, more experimental textures.
The debut EP My World (2017) introduced a project defined by introspective melodies and a deep connection to the landscapes of northern Portugal. This foundation expanded with the full‑length Darkness Falls from the Sky (2018), a release that solidified Dark Alchemy’s identity: slow, windswept guitar lines, mournful atmospheres, and a lyrical focus on nature as both refuge and void. Filipe’s background in the region of Trás‑os‑Montes—its isolation, forests, and harsh winters—shapes the emotional tone of the music, grounding it in a sense of rural solitude.
With the singles Mountain Chant (2019) and Uma Noite na Estrada da Amargura (2020), the project moved toward a more personal and atmospheric direction, incorporating elements of neofolk and ambient minimalism while retaining the rawness of its black metal roots. These works reflect a growing emphasis on mood and narrative, using sparse arrangements to evoke longing, memory, and the quiet desolation of empty roads and nocturnal landscapes.
Across its evolution, Dark Alchemy has remained fully independent, guided by Filipe’s shifting artistic impulses. While the early years were firmly grounded in atmospheric folk and post‑black metal, later material shows a willingness to experiment beyond genre boundaries, exploring new textures without abandoning the project’s core themes of nature, emptiness, and introspective solitude.
