Darkness emerged from the isolated northern town of Vardø, Finnmark in 1993, founded by bassist/vocalist Roy and drummer Kenneth. Their music belongs to the earliest wave of raw, unpolished Norwegian black metal created far from the Oslo-centric scene, shaped instead by the bleak, windswept Barents Sea environment. The band’s sound was primitive, atmospheric, and sorrow-driven, relying on minimal equipment and a fiercely DIY ethos. Their earliest recordings were produced using multiple cassette players, resulting in a uniquely degraded, spectral sound that has since become a point of cult fascination among collectors of obscure Norwegian demos.
Though Darkness never achieved the notoriety of the major Norwegian acts of the era, their work is often cited in underground circles as an example of the “true” northern extremity of the genre—harsh, intimate, and untouched by commercial influence. Their 1994 demo Fortidens Skugge is the best-known artifact from the band, featuring lo-fi riffs, distant screams, and a cold, sorrowful atmosphere that reflects the thematic focus on witchcraft, ancient spirits, and northern mysticism. Reviews from underground zines describe the demo as raw but evocative, capturing the spirit of early 90s black metal with an almost ritualistic minimalism.
Their second demo, An Evil Born in Heaven (1996), showed a slight evolution in structure and guitar presence, thanks to the addition of guitarist Frank. While still extremely raw, the material hinted at a more defined melodic sensibility beneath the noise and tape hiss. Despite this progression, the band remained unsigned and operated entirely independently, leaving behind only these two demos before fading into obscurity. No official statement about their disbandment was ever released, but the lack of activity after the mid-90s confirms their dissolution.
Darkness remains a footnote in Norwegian black metal history—an obscure, frostbitten project whose limited output is valued today for its authenticity and its glimpse into the remote fringes of the early scene.
