Deathcircle is one of the central pillars of the Bosnian Black Plague Circle, a collective known for its hostile, atmospheric and spiritually corrosive approach to black metal. Formed in Sarajevo in 2012, the project has remained active and consistent, driven entirely by O., one of the most prolific and influential musicians in the Balkan underground. Deathcircle’s sound is rooted in raw black metal, but with a distinctly suffocating and introspective character—obsessed with death, negativity and abstract inner decay.
The debut demo In These Depths of Madness We Proclaim Thy Name (2012) immediately established the project’s identity: lo‑fi, oppressive, and ritualistic. The riffs were repetitive and trance‑inducing, the vocals distant and tortured, and the production deliberately murky. This early material aligned Deathcircle with the emerging aesthetic of the Black Plague Circle, where atmosphere and emotional violence took precedence over clarity or technicality.
The split with Cave Ritual (2014) further cemented Deathcircle’s place within the collective, pairing two of Sarajevo’s most important raw black metal entities. That same year, The Current of Deceit expanded the project’s sonic palette, introducing more dynamic shifts while retaining the bleak, suffocating core. Unfair Relief (2017) pushed the project deeper into psychological territory—its title reflecting the project’s fixation on suffering, futility and internal collapse.
After several years of sporadic activity, Deathcircle returned with the split Deathcircle / Xzælthu (2021), a release that reintroduced the project to a wider underground audience. The following year saw the release of the first full‑length, Feast upon the World of Illusions (2022), widely regarded as the project’s most complete and devastating work. The album blended raw black metal with a more atmospheric, almost meditative sense of dread, creating a suffocating experience that resonated strongly with followers of the Black Plague Circle.
The compilations Kollektion – Unfiltered Hauntings (2023) and Chambers of… Unfair Relief (2024) gathered rare and early material, preserving the project’s evolution and reinforcing its cult status. These releases highlight Deathcircle’s consistency: a project that has never compromised its rawness or its thematic fixation on death, negativity and spiritual erosion.
Deathcircle’s importance within the Bosnian underground cannot be overstated. Alongside Arjen, Cave Ritual, Nigrum Ignis Circuli, Night’s Majesty, Niteris, Obskuritatem, Sulphuric Night, Suša, Void Prayer and VraÄŤ, it forms the backbone of the Black Plague Circle—one of the most influential and enigmatic black metal collectives of the last decade. O.’s involvement in dozens of interconnected projects has shaped the sound of an entire regional movement, and Deathcircle stands as one of his most personal and enduring creations.
