Defying is a black/progressive/post‑metal band from Olsztyn, Warmia‑Masuria, active since 2008 and known for blending atmospheric black metal, progressive structures, and post‑metal expansiveness into a sound that is both immersive and emotionally charged. Formed by bassist Paweł Siemaszko and drummer Tomasz Semeniuk, the band initially explored experimental metal territories before solidifying their identity through a combination of heavy, textured riffing and introspective, often cinematic compositions. With the addition of vocalist and rhythm guitarist Piotr Stępiński in 2010 and lead guitarist Szymon Stadniczeńko in 2017, Defying developed into a cohesive and dynamic four‑piece capable of shifting seamlessly between aggression, atmosphere, and progressive complexity.
Their debut album Nexus Artificial (2014) introduced a forward‑thinking approach to extreme metal, weaving together blackened intensity, progressive rhythms, and post‑metal ambience. The record was noted in underground circles for its conceptual depth and its ability to balance heaviness with expansive, layered soundscapes. Defying continued to refine their style with the EP The Splinter of Light We Misread (2016), a release praised for its emotional weight, intricate guitar work, and the band’s growing command of tension and release.
After a period of focused development, Defying returned with the single Silence in 2018, followed by Tempus Infaustum in 2024, a track that later appeared on the Trip to Poland II compilation. These releases showcased a darker, more atmospheric direction, marked by dense textures and a heightened sense of dramatic pacing.
In 2024, the band released their long‑awaited second full‑length album Wadera, a work that solidified their reputation as one of the most compelling progressive black/post‑metal acts in Poland. The album combined ferocity with introspection, featuring expansive compositions, dynamic contrasts, and a strong narrative flow. Critics highlighted its immersive production, emotional resonance, and the band’s ability to merge disparate influences into a unified artistic vision.
Still signed to the independent label These Hands Melt, Defying continue to evolve while maintaining a strong presence in the Polish underground. Their music stands out for its atmospheric depth, progressive ambition, and the sense of exploration that runs through every release, marking them as a band committed to pushing the boundaries of extreme metal.
