Dekadens is a depressive and post‑black metal band from Warsaw, active since 2012 and shaped by themes of depression, suicide, satanism, societal collapse, and urban decay. Initially a solo side‑project of N.O., the band spent its early years cultivating a raw, intimate, and emotionally corrosive sound rooted in the bleakness of modern city life. Over time, Dekadens evolved into a full lineup, but the project has always retained the personal, confessional tone established during its solitary beginnings.
N.O. remains the central creative force, serving as the band’s lead vocalist and, until 2024, its bassist. His work in projects such as Ezkaton and Carrion Breed informs Dekadens’ blend of depressive black metal, post‑black atmosphere, and nihilistic lyricism. The addition of guitarists Kyrie (also of Grimgrave) and LethaĹ„ski (Katorga) expanded the band’s sonic palette, bringing sharper melodic lines and a more layered, immersive approach. Drummer Feldscher provides a foundation that shifts between slow, suffocating rhythms and bursts of frantic intensity, while Der Golem, known from Cremaster, Fiasko, and Mental Wounds, joined as bassist in 2024, adding further weight to the band’s sound. Live performances are supported by guitarist PaweĹ‚ Wankiewicz, active since 2016.
Dekadens’ discography reflects a steady progression from raw depressive black metal toward a more atmospheric and post‑black expression. Their debut EP Crossroads (2017) introduced the project’s bleak aesthetic, marked by anguished vocals, minimalist riffs, and a suffocating emotional tone. The single Noir Desir (2019) deepened their exploration of urban despair, while the EP Shrouded in Dismal Detest (2020) showcased a more refined production and a stronger interplay between melody and dissonance.
Their first full‑length album, Surrender (2023), stands as the band’s most complete artistic statement. The record blends depressive black metal with post‑metal textures, weaving themes of self‑destruction, existential exhaustion, and spiritual collapse into a cohesive narrative. Critics within the underground praised its emotional authenticity, its balance between rawness and atmosphere, and its ability to evoke the oppressive weight of modern life.
Dekadens have also appeared on several compilations, contributing tracks such as “An Emanation of Grief,” “Global Euthanasia,” and “Emergency Exit,” which helped circulate their music within the international depressive black metal community.
Still unsigned and operating independently, Dekadens remain a stark voice within Poland’s post‑black metal landscape—an uncompromising project that channels personal suffering, societal decay, and urban nihilism into a sound that is both intimate and devastating.
