Demise was a melodic death/black metal band from Elbląg, active from 1995 until their dissolution in 2005, and one of the notable names in the Warmia‑Masuria extreme metal scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their music combined the aggression of death metal with the cold atmosphere of black metal, shaped by themes of apocalypse, pain, and torture. Known for their sharp riffing, intense dual‑guitar work, and a balance between melody and brutality, Demise earned a solid underground following and appeared on several influential Polish metal compilations of the era.
The band was formed in 1995 by drummer Marek “L. Rambo” Matkiewicz, guitarist Andrzej “Sin” BrÄ…giel, and guitarist/vocalist Przemek “Ozz” Ozga, with bassist Arek Jaworski completing the early lineup. Over time, Jaworski was replaced by B. Low, whose background in Immemorial and Enter Chaos added further weight to the band’s sound. Several members were active in other respected Polish acts, including Damnation, Moon, Trauma (live), and Aeonian, placing Demise firmly within the interconnected network of Poland’s extreme metal underground.
Demise’s first recording, the demo Outcome of… (1996), introduced their blend of melodic death and black metal, marked by raw production and a strong sense of urgency. Their debut full‑length Like a Thorn (1998) expanded their reach, showcasing more refined songwriting and a clearer melodic identity. The album helped establish them as a rising force, earning attention from zines and fans of Poland’s growing extreme metal scene.
Their second album, God Insect (2000), released through Empire Records, represented a major step forward. With tighter musicianship, darker atmospheres, and a more aggressive edge, the album received positive underground recognition and secured the band spots on compilations such as Adrenalina, Ultimate Revenge, and Voices of Polish Underground. Tracks like “Called Them Gods,” “Icarus,” and “Deadly Embrace” became some of their best‑known songs thanks to these appearances.
Demise continued to evolve, releasing Promo 2001 as a preview of their next direction. Their final album, Torture Garden (2005), delivered their most polished and intense material, blending melodic structures with a harsher, more modern production. The record demonstrated the band’s maturity and solidified their reputation, but shortly after its release, Demise quietly disbanded.
Despite their split, Demise remain a respected name among collectors and fans of Polish melodic death/black metal. Their discography captures a decade of evolution within the Polish underground, reflecting both the raw spirit of the 1990s and the growing sophistication of the early 2000s extreme metal scene.
