Delmats is a little‑documented black metal band from Ljubuški, West Herzegovina, active from 2006 and named in homage to the Delmatae, the ancient Illyrian tribe considered the earliest known inhabitants of the Herzegovina region. This historical reference gives the project a distinct cultural anchor, setting it apart from many contemporaries in the Bosnian underground who tend to focus on occult or nihilistic themes. While the band’s lyrical direction remains unknown, the choice of name suggests an interest in regional identity, ancestral heritage or mythic reinterpretation.

The band’s only known release, the demo Seeds of Impurity (2007), represents the raw, formative stage of Delmats’ sound. Circulating in extremely limited quantities, the demo showcased a traditional black metal approach: cold riffing, harsh vocals and a straightforward, unpolished production typical of early Bosnian underground recordings. Though little information survives regarding its reception, Seeds of Impurity has become a rare artifact among collectors of Balkan black metal due to its scarcity and the band’s subsequent disappearance from public view.

Delmats’ lineup consisted of four musicians active in the local Herzegovinian metal scene. Guitarists and vocalists Drago Mandić and Ĺ˝eljo Dalmatin formed the core of the band, both later associated with the project Death in Fire. Their dual‑vocal and dual‑guitar approach gave Delmats a layered yet aggressive sound. Bassist Ivan Jovanović and drummer Vedran PaĹľulj completed the lineup, the latter also known for his involvement in Secret South. The band briefly featured Dalibor Bošnjak as lead vocalist in 2006, though he departed before or shortly after the demo’s recording.

Due to the absence of further releases, live documentation or interviews, Delmats remains an enigmatic presence within the Bosnian black metal landscape. Their lone demo stands as a snapshot of a small but active scene in West Herzegovina during the mid‑2000s—raw, local, and rooted in a sense of regional identity rarely explored in the country’s extreme metal output.
