Division was formed in mid‑2012 in Vilnius and served as the direct precursor to what would later become Sisyphean—one of Lithuania’s most acclaimed modern black metal acts. In their short existence under the Division name, the band explored a hybrid style rooted in black, death, and thrash metal, marked by sharp riffing, militaristic aggression, and lyrical themes centered on societal collapse, warfare, and moral decay. Their sound was raw, fast, and confrontational, reflecting the youthful intensity of a band still shaping its identity.
The group’s only official release, the 2013 EP Fall of Nations, captured this early phase with a blend of thrash‑driven rhythms, blackened atmosphere, and death metal weight. Underground listeners noted the EP’s urgency and its thematic focus on geopolitical ruin and human self‑destruction—motifs that would later evolve into the more philosophical and existential direction of Sisyphean. The production remained gritty and unpolished, emphasizing the band’s DIY origins and the rawness of their early songwriting.
Division’s lineup included several musicians who would go on to form the core of Sisyphean, and their chemistry was already evident in the tight interplay between guitars and drums. The addition of a second guitarist in 2013 expanded their sound, giving the band a thicker, more layered approach. However, the project was short‑lived: by 2014, the members chose to abandon the Division name and reemerge as Sisyphean, marking a shift toward a more atmospheric, dissonant, and conceptually ambitious form of black metal.
Although Division’s discography is limited to a single EP, their role as the foundation of Sisyphean gives them a notable place in the Lithuanian extreme metal lineage. Fall of Nations stands as a document of the band’s formative aggression before their transformation into one of the country’s most respected black metal entities.
