Durklas is a Vilnius‑based black metal project formed in 2021, emerging from the new wave of Lithuanian pagan‑themed extreme metal. The band’s sound is rooted in traditional black metal aggression—fast tremolo riffs, sharp melodic phrasing, and martial rhythmic drive—while incorporating lyrical and atmospheric elements inspired by Baltic paganism, mythic warfare, and heroic fantasy. From the beginning, Durklas positioned itself as a project focused on narrative and atmosphere, blending raw intensity with epic, triumphant overtones.
The early phase of the band (2021–2023) was driven almost entirely by Herkus, who handled all instruments and composition. This period produced a rapid succession of releases: the 2022 single Kol jie miršta, the SaulÄ—tekis EP, and the single Triumvirate. These works established the project’s identity—cold, melodic black metal infused with a sense of ancient ritual and battlefield grandeur. The material was noted in underground circles for its clarity of vision and its ability to evoke Baltic landscapes and mythic archetypes through sharp, evocative riffing.
In 2023, Durklas expanded into a fuller lineup, with Herkus shifting to guitar duties and KartuvÄ—s continuing as the band’s vocalist. The addition of guitarist MozÄ— in 2024 further strengthened the project’s instrumental depth, allowing for more layered arrangements and a broader melodic palette.
The 2024 full‑length The Horn of Victory marked a major milestone, presenting a more mature and cohesive sound. The album blended ferocity with atmosphere, weaving themes of ancestral memory, warlike exaltation, and mythic triumph. It was followed by the single Dominion, which hinted at an even more expansive direction.
Durklas’ most ambitious work to date, the 2026 full‑length Velino Valdose, delves deeper into fantasy‑driven pagan black metal, with richer storytelling and more dynamic compositions. The album reflects the band’s evolution from a solo project into a fully realized creative entity, maintaining raw black metal roots while embracing a grander, more narrative‑driven approach.
