Ethernus was founded in 2007, emerging from the northern Romanian metal scene with an ambitious blend of symphonic death metal, black metal, and power metal elements. Their sound is defined by dramatic orchestral layers, melodic guitar work, and a thematic focus on medieval mysticism, occult narratives, and emotional extremity. From the beginning, the band positioned itself as a hybrid project, merging harsh vocals and aggressive riffing with sweeping symphonic arrangements and storytelling rooted in fantasy and darkness.
Their debut and only fullâlength album to date, Memories from Eternity (2011), encapsulates this eclectic identity. The record features a mixture of fast, blackened passages, melodic leads, and atmospheric interludes, supported by keyboards that enhance the epic and medieval tone of the music. The album received attention in the Romanian underground for its ambitious scope and its ability to merge multiple extreme metal subgenres into a cohesive narrative experience.
Ethernus has undergone numerous lineup changes over the years, with guitarist, bassist, and vocalist Andrei SalÄgean remaining the central creative force. His involvement in other Romanian actsâmost notably Syn Ze Èase Triâhas influenced Ethernus’s stylistic evolution, bringing in elements of Transylvanian mysticism and melodic black metal. The band’s rotating cast of drummers, guitarists, and vocalists has contributed to a varied sound across their active years, ranging from symphonic aggression to atmospheric melancholy.
Despite long periods of silence and an absence of recent releases, Ethernus remains officially active. Their legacy rests on their ability to fuse symphonic grandeur with raw black/death metal energy, creating a distinctive voice within Romania’s extreme metal landscape.
