Evilfeast, founded in 1998 in Otwock by the solitary musician GrimSpirit, stands as one of the most revered and enduring forces in Polish atmospheric black metal. Emerging first under the name Darkfeast (1996–1998), the project evolved into Evilfeast with a clear artistic vision: to summon vast, nocturnal soundscapes steeped in darkness, misanthropy, nature mysticism, and fierce anti‑Christian sentiment. Over the decades, Evilfeast has become synonymous with cold, immersive black metal that channels the spirit of the 1990s while forging its own unmistakable identity.
GrimSpirit—responsible for all instruments, vocals, and compositions—crafts music defined by sweeping keyboard atmospheres, icy tremolo riffs, distant shrieks, and a sense of ancient, moonlit grandeur. His work draws heavily from the traditions of early Polish and Eastern European black metal, while also embracing the epic, medieval ambience associated with bands like Summoning. Yet Evilfeast’s sound remains uniquely its own: raw but majestic, melancholic yet triumphant, always enveloped in a thick, frostbitten aura.
The project’s early releases, including the Thy Abhorrent Emerging demo (2002) and the debut full‑length Mysteries of the Nocturnal Forest (2004), established Evilfeast as a rising force in the underground. These works blended lo‑fi ferocity with sweeping, dungeon‑synth‑infused atmospheres, earning praise for their immersive, nocturnal character. Funeral Sorcery (2005) further refined this formula, becoming one of the project’s most celebrated releases for its haunting melodies and ritualistic ambience.
The late 2000s saw a prolific period: the split Isenheimen / Abyss Calls… (2008), the full‑length Lost Horizons of Wisdom (2008), and the Wolves of Hyperborean Frost demo (2009) all deepened the project’s mythic, frost‑covered aesthetic. These releases solidified Evilfeast’s reputation for crafting long, atmospheric compositions that evoke winter landscapes, ancient forests, and the solitude of night.
With Wintermoon Enchantment (2011), GrimSpirit delivered one of the defining albums of modern atmospheric black metal—an expansive, melodic, and deeply immersive work that remains a cornerstone of the genre. The EP Invoking the Ancient (2013) and the Promo Tape 2015 continued this trajectory, offering glimpses into the project’s evolving sound.
In 2017, Evilfeast released Elegies of the Stellar Wind, widely regarded as the project’s masterpiece. The album blends cosmic melancholy with wintry mysticism, featuring some of GrimSpirit’s most intricate compositions and atmospheric arrangements. Its acclaim cemented Evilfeast as a leading figure in contemporary atmospheric black metal.
Subsequent releases—including the Isenheimen EP (2018), the split Odes to Lands of Past Traditions (2020), and the 2021 split Storm av rĂĄ nordisk dödskonst del. II / Black Witchcraft over Carpathia—demonstrate the project’s continued vitality and commitment to its cold, evocative aesthetic. Evilfeast’s music even reached beyond the underground when the track “Summoning the Splendour Once Fallen” was featured in the 2018 Netflix film Hold the Dark, introducing the project’s haunting atmosphere to a wider audience.
Now aligned with Eisenwald, Evilfeast remains an uncompromising and influential presence—an enduring monument to the power of solitary creation, nocturnal mysticism, and the timeless spirit of atmospheric black metal.
