Feylamia emerged in 2001 in WrocĆaw as a melodic black/death metal project shaped by a rotating cast of musicians but anchored in a consistent fascination with death, darkness, and the dramatic interplay between aggression and atmosphere. Their soundârooted in earlyâ2000s Polish underground aestheticsâcombined sharp, melodic riffing with harsh vocals, keyboardâdriven ambience, and a sense of gothic melancholy that set them apart from more traditional black metal acts of the era.
The band’s sole fullâlength, Looking from the Grave (2001), captured this early vision with a raw yet expressive blend of melodic death metal structures and blackened intensity. The album leaned heavily on dualâguitar harmonies, midâtempo rhythmic drive, and the atmospheric presence of keyboards, creating a sound that was both forceful and mournful. Vocalsâharsh, anguished, and occasionally theatricalâreinforced the album’s themes of mortality and darkness. Though the production bore the hallmarks of a young band working independently, the songwriting revealed ambition and a strong melodic instinct.
Feylamia’s lineup shifted frequently in their early years, with contributions from guitarists Krzysztof PoĆeĆ and Ćukasz, keyboardists MichaĆ and RafaĆ Prus, and several drummers including Max, Tomasz “Ladar” Klimas, and Robert “BhoGhu” Michalskiâfigures connected to various corners of the Lower Silesian extreme metal scene. These changes contributed to the band’s fluid identity and long periods of inactivity.
After an extended hiatus, Feylamia resurfaced in 2015 with a renewed lineup and a more stable core: bassist PaweĆ, drummer Marcin, guitarist Mariusz Dowhaniuk (known from Nemesis and Resurrection), and vocalist Emilia. This incarnation brought a more modern sensibility while retaining the melodic black/death foundation. Emilia’s presence introduced a new vocal dimensionâharsh yet textured, capable of carrying both aggression and emotional weightâwhile Dowhaniuk’s guitar work added precision and a more contemporary melodic edge.
Though the band has not released new material since their 2001 debut, their reactivation signals a continued commitment to the project’s dark, melodic roots. Feylamia remains an obscure but intriguing thread in the tapestry of Lower Silesia’s extreme metal historyâa band shaped by transformation, perseverance, and a lingering devotion to the shadows from which they first emerged.
